If you're wondering what that smell is, it's the cheese. What cheese you ask? Well it's the most incredible cheese you'll never see. Yes, I'm afraid you will never see it. Why? Well, you see, it's a peculiar story.
I was on my way to town to sell the pig to the butcher and return with the bacon as you instructed. Upon approaching the clearing outside of town I noticed an old man. At least I assumed he was old due to his white hair and wrinkled skin. He must have been unusually tall when he was younger for despite old age having hunched his back—now forcing him to lean heavily on a walking stick—he was nearly a foot taller than me.
The old mage hailed me inquiring enthusiastically about the pig. I explained that I was to sell the pig to the town butcher and return to you with the bacon. The old man smiled a forlorn smile and described to me in cheerless detail how lonesome he felt. His greatest desire was to have a companion and for said companionship he would trade his greatest possession for the pig. Despite my better judgement I reluctantly acquiesced to his request. He turned, reached into his bag, and gently pulled out what seemed to be a flat golden disk.
Upon closer examination, realization having struck me as to what this disk was I told him there was nothing magic, not even interesting, about a flat piece of cheese. The old man turned slowly, his green eyes glowed with excitement as he explained that this cheese was, indeed, magical. He held the cheese to my nose asking me to smell it. A bouquet of walnuts, milk, honey and cream with a hint of cinnamon invaded my nose. The aroma made my mouth water. The old man then asked me to taste the cheese. I took a small piece and placed it on my tongue. Warm bread fresh from the oven was filling my mouth with it's buttery taste. Suddenly turkey with cranberries was on my tongue. I was amazed when the cheese then tasted like hot apple pie. I swallowed it down greedily and my belly was full.
The old man seeing the smile on my face then explained this wasn't the only magical quality the cheese possessed.
All I could think about was how excited you would be once you saw the cheese, smelled it, tasted it and then learned of it's magic. I made the trade with no hesitation. He thanked me and I thanked him as I turned quickly for home. I ran as fast as I could carrying the cheese with care. I looked down at the cheese in my hands with excitement as I approached our door. I didn't notice the door swing open until it was too late. You had opened the door in anticipation of my arrival as my hands crashed into it. I saw the disk of cheese flash it's golden glow as it turned over in air then, like a flash, it was gone.
Where did it go you ask? Well, I suppose I should tell you of the other magical quality of the cheese. Although it's smell and taste was magical enough this wasn't the real magic of the cheese. One side, explained the old man, made the cheese infinite. The magical, one-sided disk of cheese had fed him for nearly 50 years. He then warned if it were ever to turn over it would cease to exist.
The End.
